Chapter History

Gleanings from "History of the Order of The Eastern Star in North Carolina", an official publication of the Grand Chapter of North Carolina.
(Commentary by the Webmaster)

Six years after the organization of the General Grand Chapter, the first Eastern Star Chapter organized in North Carolina, Hope Chapter #1 of Boone, was chartered under the General Grand Chapter. (1882)

The Grand Chapter of North Carolina was organized at Asheville.  May 20, 1905

The Grand Secretary reported that "Brother Masons were going through the country giving the Eastern Star work by communicating it to ladies and brothers without the benefit of a chapter or without any real knowledge of the Order, not even the floor work."  June 4, 1907

In his report at the Twelfth Triennial Assembly, the Most Worthy Grand Patron stated: "If the Order of The Eastern Star in our country had waited for endorsement of a Grand Lodge before a chapter could be organized, then that one chapter would still be un-organized."(1907)

At the fifth Annual Session in Asheville, those in attendance included members from Golden Link Chapter #54 of Goldsboro.   There is no previous mention of when the Chapter was instituted, but at that session the Charter for Golden Link Chapter was signed.  June 14, 1910

According to the proceedings of the fifth Annual Session we found the following: "When the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge requested rituals, it was learned that he had conferred the degrees upon a number of ladies.  Therefore the Grand Chapter, through the office of the Worthy Grand Patron, investigated the matter.  The Grand Chapter went on record as denouncing any Master Mason for performing such illegal work... The Worthy Grand Patron and the Grand Secretary were notified to take the matter up with the Grand Master and the Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge."  June 14, 1910

I find that again during the sixth Annual Session, the Charter of Golden Link Chapter #54 was signed.  So we now have our charter signed during two consecutive Grand Chapter Sessions.  I have no answer for this discrepancy.  June 13, 1911

At the eleventh Annual Session, the Worthy Grand Patron made several "suggestions" for the welfare of the Order.   Among them was the request "that officers leave their rituals at home and have their work memorized."  (June 13, 1916)
I think we need such "suggestions" in current times!

At the fourteenth Annual Session, the Worthy Grand Patron recommended that the office of Associate Patron be established for subordinate chapters. The Jurisprudence Committee disapproved the suggestion!  (June 9, 1919)

For the very first time in the history of our Grand Chapter, recognition was given to Worthy Matrons, Worthy Patrons, Past Matrons and Past Patrons of subordinate chapters.
(June 7, 1921)

It appears that someone finally realized that the basic foundation of our Order is the subordinate chapter.

Goldsboro UD was instituted on June 12, 1928 and constituted on June 12, 1929
Note:  Some discrepancies will be found concerning dates of constitution.  The 1st W. Matron's report (below) was done from memory some time later.

GOLDSBORO CHAPTER #54 INSTITUTION

By Lelia Davis Edmunson, first Worthy Matron

While attending a State D.A.R. meeting in Raleigh In April, 1928, I met Sister Alice Harper Parker, Grand Matron O.E.S. She delivered a very fine speech concerning the work of that patriotic organization and closed her remarks with the statement that if she could be a member of only one organization she'd choose to be a member of the Order Of The Eastern Star. The question presented itself to me, why should we not enjoy this relationship to Masonry in Goldsboro? After the meeting I introduced myself to Sister Parker and talked with her concerning the organization of a chapter in Goldsboro. Upon arriving home the next day a great desire to organize a chapter here burned in my heart. I began communicating with Sister Alice Harper Parker of Farmville, N.C. Grand Matron of The O.E.S. and Brother Leon Cash, Grand Patron of the O.E.S. of Winston Salem, N.C. and asked them to give me detailed instructions as to the organizing of a Chapter of O.E.S. in Goldsboro.

After contacting a number of Mason's wives I found a general desire to form a chapter. There were 41 petitioners asking for dispensation to organize a chapter which was duly forwarded to the Grand Secretary with the sum of Fifty Dollars ($ 50.00) as required. The chapter was set to work and regularly Installed at the Institution of Goldsboro # 54 U.D. on April 12, 1928 at 3;30 P.M. in the Masonic Home, Goldsboro, N.C.

Sister Edna W. Smith, District Deputy Grand Matron of the Fourth District presided. After opening the meeting, she expressed her delight at instituting this chapter and told us of Robert Morris's work in the founding of the Order Of The Eastern Star.

The petion for a dispensation with a list of 41 Charter members was read by the Secretary. The following were then installed:

Worthy Maton Lelia Davis Edmundson
Worthy Patron Fred B. Crowson
Asso. Matron Mary Casteen Loftin
Secretary Beulah Crawford

After the Installation, Sister Edna W. Smith, District Deputy Grand Matron, gave an instructive and inspiring address on the work of the order. We were then called from Labor to Refreshment at the Goldsboro Hotel where all enjoyed a well planned banquet after which we returned to the Masonic Home to resume our Labor. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. Lydia Chapter 109 - Exemplified the work by initiating "by sight" the first three (3) candidates - Paul B. Edmundson - Dr. C. F. Strosnider - and Julia Prince Nash. Before closing Bro. F. B. Crowson -W.P. thanked the visitors for their services.

On October, 3, 1928 - Goldsboro Chapter U.D. O.E.S. was called in session for the purpose of constituting the chapter at which time the Worthy Grand Matron Grace K, Edwards Presented our Charter declaring Goldsboro Chapter #54 duly Constituted.
