Welcome Brethren and Visitors!
If there's something about Freemasonry as a fraternal order that you don't understand, please enter your questions here. We will try to supply you with correct information. Like any organization, we have certain modes of recognition that we must hold secret, but you will be surprised how few "secrets" we really have. Remember, 2B1Ask1

My husband Philip Lorenzo Goodson, Jr. joined Lodge #284 in Greenville, North Carolina about the time we were married in 1954 and paid his dues until the time he got sick with cancer. He died June 17, 2002 and someone told me I should have gotten a check from the Lodge where he had been a member. Is this true?

Webmaster comments:
I think you are referring to the Shrine, not his Lodge. Some Shriners belong to the "Widow's Fund" and at their death a check is forwarded to the widow. If your husband was in good standing with the Shrine and was a paid up member of the Widow's Fund, then you should have received funds from them. |

I wanted to ask if the Masonic organization might possibly have any records, that could be shared with me, of an ancestor of mine. The ancestor is Abner Neale, and he was a North Carolina Grand Treasurer in 1787. I certainly don't expect a reply during the holidays but would appreciate hearing back from you at your convenience. Thank you, and Merry Christmas,

Of course there are many more Masonic Poems that I have not included here, but due to space restrictions, I must choose favorites. But thanks for the tip. I will try to find a copy of Brother Glick's book. |

I found your site extremely interesting and reviewed everything in hope of finding info on initiation goggles. I am in possesion of a very old hand made pair and am very interested in finding out more about them. If you can head me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Sincerely, Nod D'Nal-Teews

"Initiation Goggles" is a term with which I am totally unfamiliar! I have been a Mason since 1965 and visited Lodges in quite a few countries and many U.S. Jurisdictions. If this term truly applies to freemasonry, would someone e-mail me with a description of these items? Many Thanks. NOTE: I received the following e-mail on this subject: "I should say that I am not a freemason but most of the men in my family are and I have seen a pair of these here in Scotland. I can't say where they came from but my grandfather collected a lot of masonic odds and ends and some of the lodges round here have unusual practices. My father's lodge put the apprentice in a real coffin and screw the lid down during one of the ceremonies. Now that would be sure to have an effect on him! Its quite well known of course and its one of the things their lodge is known for. Maybe over here there is more variation in the way they do these things and it may be that one of the local lodges did use the goggles." Gordon Hudson |
